Recently I was running Defrag and all of a sudden some bad noises came out of my 5.1gb Maxtor hardrive that is in my computer, and the computer froze. Now the bios autodetects the drive as a 1gb drive and wont boot with it entered as anything in the BIOS. If I keep it as none, I am able to boot and run the Maxtor Diagnostics and it passes everything but "Read Verify OD". My question is will Hard Drive Mechanic be able to get any files off it?
Running scandisk reported errors, fixed them, tried to reinstall Windows, it said to run scandisk again which then reported different errors and then the screen said File Allocation Table bad.

Question:What type of UNDO is available?

Answer:The rescue disks made in HDM Deluxe will backup the file system area of the partition you are working on. If you are working on partition E: the rescue information will be (boot, partition and FAT), for partition E: only. If you move to repair a second partition, say an F: drive, you must create a rescue disk for it as well. HDM only works on one partition at a time, and the rescue disk is used to UNDO any repair which HDM performs on a specific partition.

Question:Can HDM fix problems even though it is not currently installed?

Answer:Yes, that is the best thing about the Hard Drive Mechanic, it is an after the fact solution. We should be able to get the data back as long as the drive is not physically damaged and your PCs bios can see the drive.

Question:Does HDMD work with dynamic overlays such as EZ-drive?
The HDMD does not work with overlays as these overlays use untraditional methods to write to the drive.

Question:Will HDM Deluxe work with a "non-OSR2 version of Windows 95 even though it indicates you need a Windows 95 OSR2 or Windows 98 boot disk?

Answer:The HDM Deluxe requires a Windows 95b (osr/2) boot disk to perform any repairs and it will repair non-OSR2 versions.

Question:The instructions for Creating a Rescue Disk appear to be no different then the instructions for fixing a Missing Operating System. Are they the same?

No

Question:When I run the Mechanic it finds no problems, but my PC won't boot up.

Answer:If the HDM is saying there is nothing wrong than either the file system is intact or the drive is physically damaged and cannot been seen even by the PC. If your system setup cannot see a hard drive, that is a clue. Try booting off of a DOS disk and running FDISK. If it says 'No Fixed Disk Present' then the drive is physically damaged, unfortunately no software program can fix that.

Question:How do I know if I have Windows OSR2 or a Windows an OSR2 boot disk?

Answer:To identify your version of Windows 95, right-click the M My Computer icon and select P Properties from the shortcut menu. Under the General tab, your version is listed under the word System. If you have OSR2, it says: Microsoft Windows 95 4.00.950.b or Microsoft Windows 95 4.00.950.1111 You can determine the version through DOS by typing VER at the DOS prompt. If it's OSR2 it says: Windows 95 [version 4.00.1111]. Also, you can look on the Windows CD and it should say "For distribution only with a new PC" if you have an OSR2 version.

Question:When I run the single file processor (SFP) and tell it to copy, I get the error message, "HDM Deluxe could not find an active logical drive." What does that mean?

Answer:This message indicates that your computer is FAT16 not FAT32 and you have booted from a pre OSR2 boot disk. You need to create a Windows 95 OSR2 or Windows 98 boot disk.

Question:HDM Deluxe doesn't load. It just says, "Error: Found an Extended Memory Handler! Reboot computer without XMS driver!" What does that mean?

Answer:An XMS driver is a file that handles how the memory in the computer is addressed by programs run on it. Usually this file is on your boot disk. Try re-starting your PC from a boot disk without Config.sys or Himem.sys

Question:When I load HDM Deluxe, the system stops responding. It won't load no matter how long I wait. What do I do?

Answer:HDM Deluxe requires that the CPU is at least a 486DX or faster. A stall can occur if the system is a 286, 386 or a slower 486. If your system is slower than recommended, you can take the hard drive out and move it to another computer and then run HDM Deluxe. Once it is recovered you can move it back to the old system.

Question:Does it matter how old the drive is? Will HDM work on even the older smaller hard drives?

Answer:Yes, however the drive must be connected to a PC with at least a 486DX processor, in order to work.

Question:I try to restore from my floppies and it says that it couldn't find the SAFE file.

Answer:Make sure you have the right floppy in the drive. You don't want the HDM Deluxe disk, you want the Rescue Disk that was created with HDM Deluxe. See "Creating a Rescue Disk" on page 6 of your manual.

Question:When I try and repair the partition it says, "Could not write file system data to drive." What does that mean?

Answer:When HDM Deluxe tries to write to the hard drive it can't. The drive may have some physical damage. You may want to reboot the computer and try it again to verify that something else wasn't locking out the drive.

Question:I get an error that says, "Could not allocate base memory." What does this mean?

Answer:Your PC has run out of memory. Most hard drives can be recovered with 16 MB of RAM. However, depending on the size of the drive, HDM Deluxe may need 32 MB of RAM.

Question:It asks me if this is a Compaq drive. Why?

Answer:If you are not using a Compaq machine, answer (N) No. Sometimes this message appears if the beginning part of the drive is so damaged that HDM Deluxe can no longer tell if it is a Compaq drive. Compaq puts a small non-DOS partition on their drives.

Question:I get an error that says, "File system so damaged that HDM Deluxe could not determine file system type. Is this drive a FAT32 drive?" What do I do now?

Answer:In order to properly repair your drive it is important to know if a third party utility, or a non-Microsoft partitioning utility was used to convert a previously FAT16 file system to a FAT32 file system. If a utility of that type was used, the answer is (Y)Yes. However, if the FAT32 files system was created with fdisk, a Microsoft utility or Windows upgrade software, then the answer is (N)No.

Answer:The error you are receiving is a physical error which no software can get around. There is really no way of retrieving the data without sending it to a clean room to be recovered. If you need anything else please let me know.

Question:Running scandisk reported errors, fixed them, tried to reinstall Windows, it said to run scandisk again which then reported different errors and then the screen said File Allocation Table bad.

Answer:If scandisk is reporting errors that frequently that indicates that the integrity of the hard drive is questionable. If this is a newer drive I would suggest getting to replaced under warranty. If you need anything else please let me know.
